How to Get Rid of an Old Mattress in Toledo
Getting rid of an old mattress is one of those tasks that sounds simple until you try to do it. A mattress does not fit in a trash can, most curbside waste services will not pick one up on a regular collection day, and carrying a king-size mattress down a staircase and into a vehicle is a two-person job at minimum. Mattresses are also one of the most commonly dumped items in alleys and vacant lots precisely because disposal is inconvenient — but illegal dumping carries fines in Toledo, and there are better options.
Why mattresses are hard to dispose of
Mattresses create disposal challenges that most household items do not:
- Size and weight. A queen mattress is roughly 60 by 80 inches and weighs 60 to 150 pounds depending on the type. Memory foam mattresses are on the heavier end. Pillow-top mattresses are bulkier. Add a box spring and you have doubled the problem
- Landfill space. Mattresses take up enormous space in landfills because they do not compress well. The steel springs inside innerspring mattresses resist compaction. Some landfills charge extra for mattresses or require them to be delivered separately from regular waste
- Transport difficulty. A mattress does not fit inside most cars. It technically fits on the roof of an SUV or in a pickup truck bed, but an unsecured mattress on a highway is a serious hazard — mattresses on roadways cause accidents every year. Tying one to a roof rack with household rope or bungee cords is unreliable at highway speeds
- Stairs and tight spaces. Moving a mattress out of a second or third floor bedroom means navigating staircases, doorways, and hallways. Flexible foam mattresses bend and flop. Rigid innerspring mattresses do not bend enough for tight corners. Either way, this is difficult without a second person
Toledo curbside bulk pickup
The City of Toledo offers bulk item pickup for residents, which can include mattresses:
- Scheduling. Bulk pickup must be scheduled in advance through the city's waste collection services. Place the mattress at the curb on your scheduled pickup day. Do not place it out more than 24 hours before your pickup — mattresses left at the curb attract illegal dumping of other items and can result in code violations
- Preparation. Wrap the mattress in plastic if possible (mattress disposal bags are available at hardware stores and moving supply retailers). This keeps the mattress dry if it rains before pickup and makes it easier for the collection crew to handle. A wet mattress can double in weight
- Limitations. Bulk pickup has limits on the number of items per pickup and may not be available on a convenient schedule. During peak moving season (spring and summer), wait times can be longer
Drop-off at the landfill
Lucas County has landfill and transfer station facilities that accept mattresses. You can deliver a mattress yourself if you have a vehicle large enough to transport it:
- Fees. Expect a disposal fee based on weight or a flat per-item charge. Fees vary by facility — call ahead to confirm the current rate and whether they accept mattresses (some transfer stations do not)
- Hours. Most facilities operate on weekday schedules with limited or no weekend hours. Plan your trip accordingly
- Secure the load. If transporting a mattress in an open truck bed, strap it down with ratchet straps. Do not rely on gravity, bungee cords, or having someone hold it. A mattress that catches wind at 45 miles per hour becomes a projectile
Donation options
If the mattress is still in usable condition — no stains, no sagging, no tears, no odor, no bed bug history — donating it keeps it out of the landfill and helps someone who needs one:
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Some ReStore locations accept mattresses in good condition. Call the Toledo-area ReStore first — acceptance varies by location and current inventory
- Local shelters and churches. Some shelters accept mattress donations, though many have specific requirements (must be clean, no stains, certain sizes only). Call ahead rather than showing up — shelters cannot accept mattresses they cannot use and have limited storage
- Online free listings. Listing a usable mattress as free on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or Freecycle often results in someone picking it up within hours. You do not have to move it farther than your porch
Important: do not donate or give away a mattress that has had bed bugs. Even if treated, a mattress with a bed bug history should be disposed of, not passed on. Wrap it in plastic and mark it clearly so that no one takes it from the curb.
Mattress recycling
Mattresses are highly recyclable — the steel springs, wood frames, cotton batting, and foam can all be separated and reused. However, mattress recycling facilities are not available everywhere:
- Availability. Dedicated mattress recycling programs exist in some areas but may not be conveniently located near Toledo. Check with the Lucas County Solid Waste Management District for current recycling options
- How it works. Mattress recyclers disassemble each mattress by hand or machine. Steel springs are baled and sold to scrap metal processors. Foam is shredded for carpet padding or insulation. Cotton and fabric are recycled into industrial rags or insulation. Wood frames are chipped for biomass fuel
- Cost. Mattress recycling typically costs more than landfill disposal because of the labor-intensive disassembly process. The environmental benefit is significant — a recycled mattress diverts 50 to 100 pounds of material from the landfill — but the cost is a factor
What NOT to do with an old mattress
- Do not dump it. Illegal dumping of mattresses in alleys, vacant lots, or dumpsters that do not belong to you is a code violation in Toledo. Fines can be significant, and the city has increased enforcement in recent years. It is also simply transferring the problem to someone else who then has to deal with your mattress
- Do not burn it. Burning a mattress releases toxic fumes from the foam, adhesives, and fabric treatments. It is also a fire code violation in most areas and an uncontrollable fire hazard — a mattress fire is extremely difficult to extinguish
- Do not leave it for the next tenant. If you are moving out of a rental, leaving an unwanted mattress behind makes it the landlord's problem and may result in charges against your security deposit
Professional mattress removal
Professional junk removal is the simplest option when you want the mattress gone without doing the lifting, transporting, or disposal logistics yourself:
- What it includes. A removal crew comes to your home, carries the mattress out (from whatever room and floor it is on), loads it into their truck, and handles disposal or recycling. You do not need to move it, wrap it, or be home for the full process — just make sure they can access it
- Box springs and bed frames. If you are replacing the whole bed, the box spring, frame, and headboard can go at the same time. Removing everything at once is more efficient than scheduling separate pickups
- Scheduling. Most removal companies can pick up within a day or two. If you are coordinating with a new mattress delivery, schedule the old mattress removal for the same day or the day before
