Downsizing is emotional. Decades of memories packed into every closet, cabinet, and corner. Whether your parents are moving to a smaller home, assisted living, or you’re helping manage a transition, the physical work of clearing out is often the hardest part.
Start with a Plan, Not a Dumpster
The worst approach: rent a dumpster and start throwing everything away. The best approach: take it room by room over 2-3 weeks with clear categories.
- Keep: Items moving to the new space (measure first!)
- Family: Items family members want — have them claim by a deadline
- Donate: Good-condition items that help others
- Sell: Valuable items worth the effort of listing
- Remove: Everything else — this is where we come in
Room-by-Room Strategy
Start with the Easy Rooms
Bathrooms, laundry rooms, and guest bedrooms have the least emotional attachment. Starting here builds momentum without the emotional weight of sorting through the master bedroom or living room.
Kitchen
Keep one set of dishes, one set of pots, essential utensils. Most people have 3-4x more kitchen items than they use. Duplicate appliances (how many blenders does one person need?) go first.
Master Bedroom & Living Room
Save these for last. These rooms have the most sentimental items. By this point, the process feels more manageable and decisions come easier.
Garage, Basement, Attic
These are usually the biggest hauls. Old tools, holiday decorations, furniture "in storage," boxes that haven’t been opened in years. If it hasn’t been touched in 5+ years, it’s time.
Senior-Friendly Pricing
We offer senior discounts (10% off) for downsizing cleanouts. We also work at your pace — if you need us to come back for a second load after the family has sorted through things, we’ll schedule a follow-up at no trip fee.
- Half truck: $199-249 (typical bedroom or garage)
- Full truck: $349-449 (whole-house downsizing, 2-3 rooms)
- Multiple loads: Discounted rate on additional trips
- Donation sorting: We separate donatable items and drop them off for you
Tips for a Smoother Process
- Set a family deadline for claiming items. "If you want it, pick it up by the 15th"
- Photograph sentimental items before letting them go — the memory lives in the photo
- Don’t rush decisions on truly meaningful items. Set them aside in a "decide later" box
- Hire help early. We can do the heavy lifting while you focus on the decisions
