The average American garage has $7,000 worth of stuff in it — and you can’t park in most of them. If yours has become a storage unit with a door, here’s how to take it back.
📋 Phase 1: Sort Everything Into 4 Zones
Before you move anything out, set up four clearly marked zones:
- KEEP: Things you actually use at least once a year. Be honest.
- SELL: Items worth $20+ that someone would actually buy. List on Facebook Marketplace or have a garage sale.
- DONATE: Usable items worth less than $20. Goodwill, Habitat ReStore, or local churches in the Toledo area.
- JUNK: Broken, worn out, stained, or nobody-wants-it items. This is where we come in.
Rule of thumb: If you haven’t touched it in 2+ years, it goes in SELL, DONATE, or JUNK.
🧹 Phase 2: The Deep Clean
Once the junk and donations are out, sweep the whole floor and wipe down shelves. This is also the time to:
- Check for water damage, cracks, or pest signs
- Test your garage door opener and lubricate the tracks
- Replace burned-out light bulbs (LED shop lights make a huge difference)
- Look at your electrical — overloaded extension cord nests are a fire hazard
📦 Phase 3: Organize What’s Left
The KEEP pile should be the smallest. Organize it with:
- Wall-mounted shelving: Gets everything off the floor. IKEA or Home Depot shelving works fine.
- Clear bins with labels: No more mystery boxes. See what’s inside without opening.
- Pegboard for tools: One pegboard with hooks keeps tools visible and reachable.
- Seasonal rotation: Winter gear to the back in summer. Holiday decorations up high.
⚠️ What You Can’t Just Throw Away
Ohio has rules. These items need special disposal:
- Paint & chemicals: Toledo’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection or Lucas County Solid Waste
- Tires: Ohio disposal regulations apply — most junk companies (including us) can’t take them
- Propane tanks: Exchange or return to a certified dealer
- Electronics: We can take these — we recycle responsibly
- Appliances (fridge, freezer): We haul these all the time. Freon-containing units require certified disposal, which we handle.
🚚 When to Call a Junk Removal Crew
If your JUNK pile is more than a few trash bags, it’s time to call. Signs you need professional help:
- Heavy items you can’t lift (old furniture, safes, exercise equipment)
- More junk than your curbside trash pickup will take
- You want it done in one trip, today, without making 5 dump runs
- You’d rather spend a Saturday with your family than hauling junk
A typical garage cleanout with I-HAUL runs $250–$400 depending on how much there is. We do 100% of the lifting, loading, and cleanup — you just point.
