You can’t just put an old TV on the curb in Toledo. CRT TVs contain lead. Flat screens have mercury. Both are classified as electronic waste and need special handling. Here are your options, ranked by cost.
Free Options
- Best Buy: accepts TVs up to 32 inches for free recycling. Larger TVs have a $29.99 fee but you get a $29.99 Best Buy gift card, making it effectively free
- Lucas County Drop-Off: the Solid Waste Management District accepts electronics at scheduled collection events. Check their website for dates
- Manufacturer take-back: Samsung, LG, and Sony all have mail-in recycling programs for their own products
Paid Options
- Toledo bulk pickup: schedule through the city. Free for residents but can take 2–3 weeks
- Junk removal: we pick up TVs along with other items you need gone. Usually same-day or next-day
- E-waste recyclers: some charge $15–40 for CRT TVs specifically because of the lead disposal cost
What NOT to Do
- Don’t put it in regular trash. It’s illegal in Ohio and you can be fined
- Don’t smash it. CRT glass contains 4–8 pounds of lead. Flat screens contain mercury. Neither should be released into the environment
- Don’t dump it. Illegal dumping in Lucas County carries fines up to $10,000
