Whether you're a contractor finishing a job or a homeowner doing a renovation, construction debris piles up fast. Drywall scraps, lumber offcuts, roofing shingles, concrete chunks, tile, insulation — it all needs to go somewhere, and your regular trash pickup won't take it.
Types of Construction Debris
Clean Fill (Easy to Dispose)
- Concrete and masonry: Can often be recycled at concrete crushing facilities. Toledo has several that accept clean concrete
- Clean wood: Unpainted, untreated lumber can be recycled or chipped for mulch
- Metal: Scrap metal has value. Steel beams, copper pipe, aluminum flashing — separate these and sell or recycle
- Asphalt: Recyclable at asphalt plants. Old shingles can be recycled into road material
Mixed Waste (More Complex)
- Drywall: Can be recycled if clean (no paint, tape, or contamination), but most ends up in landfill. Small amounts go in regular construction dumpsters
- Painted or treated wood: Cannot be burned or recycled as mulch. Goes to landfill
- Carpet and padding: Some facilities recycle carpet fiber, but most goes to landfill. Very bulky and heavy
- Tile and ceramics: Non-recyclable in most areas. Landfill disposal
Hazardous (Special Handling Required)
- Asbestos: Found in homes built before 1980 — floor tiles, insulation, pipe wrap, some drywall compounds. Requires licensed abatement professionals. Do NOT disturb suspected asbestos yourself
- Lead paint: Common in pre-1978 homes. Scraping or sanding creates lead dust hazard. Requires EPA-certified contractors
- Treated lumber (CCA): Older pressure-treated wood contains chromated copper arsenate. Cannot be burned. Goes to lined landfill
Disposal Options in Toledo
Dumpster Rental
The standard option for contractors. 10-yard, 20-yard, or 30-yard roll-off dumpsters delivered to your site:
- 10-yard: Small bathroom remodel, one-room demo. 3–5 days rental typically $300–$400
- 20-yard: Kitchen remodel, roof replacement. $400–$550
- 30-yard: Whole-house renovation, large demo. $500–$700
Weight limits apply. Concrete and roofing shingles are heavy — you can hit the weight limit on a 10-yard dumpster. Ask about weight fees before ordering.
Junk Removal (Us)
Faster and more flexible than a dumpster for smaller jobs or when you need one-time cleanup:
- No waiting for delivery/pickup scheduling
- We do the loading — you don't touch anything
- We sort recyclables (metal, concrete, clean wood) from landfill waste
- Better for jobs that produce one or two truck loads, not ongoing multi-week projects
- Same-day or next-day service available
Toledo Regulations
- Permits: If you're placing a dumpster on the street (not your driveway), you need a right-of-way permit from the City of Toledo
- Prohibited in regular trash: Construction debris cannot go in your regular curbside trash or recycling bins. The city will reject it
- Burning prohibited: Burning construction debris is illegal in Lucas County and most Ohio municipalities
- Storm drain protection: Construction sites must prevent debris from entering storm drains. Silt fences or drain covers may be required
Tips for Contractors
- Separate as you go: Keep separate piles for metal, clean wood, concrete, and mixed waste. Recycling reduces disposal costs
- Don't wait until the end: Schedule debris removal during the project, not just at completion. A cleaner job site is a safer job site
- Document disposal: Keep receipts from landfills and recycling facilities. Some jurisdictions require proof of legal disposal
