Spring is prime decluttering season in Toledo. The snow melts, the garage door opens, and suddenly you can see exactly how much junk accumulated over the winter. Here’s a practical, room-by-room checklist to help you decide what stays, what goes, and how to get rid of it all efficiently.
🏠 The 3-Pile System
Before you start, set up three zones in your garage or driveway:
- KEEP — things you actually use and have a place for
- DONATE/SELL — items in good condition someone else can use
- HAUL AWAY — broken, worn out, or nobody-wants-it junk
The rule: if you haven’t used it in 12 months and it doesn’t have sentimental value, it goes in pile 2 or 3.
🛋️ Living Room & Bedrooms
- Old mattresses and box springs (most donation centers won’t take them)
- Worn-out furniture — sagging couches, broken recliners, wobbly tables
- Outdated electronics: tube TVs, old DVD players, tangled cables
- Clothes you haven’t worn in a year (donate if clean, haul if stained/torn)
- Broken blinds, old curtains, worn-out rugs
🍳 Kitchen
- Broken small appliances (toasters, blenders, coffee makers)
- Chipped or mismatched dishes and glasses
- Expired pantry items (check spices — they expire too)
- Old appliances you replaced but never removed
- Plastic containers without lids (we all have a drawer of these)
🛗 Garage & Shed
This is where the big wins happen. Toledo garages are legendary for accumulation.
- Broken lawn mowers, trimmers, and garden tools
- Dried-out paint cans (Toledo household hazardous waste collection handles these)
- Old tires (scrap tire drop-off at the Lucas County facility)
- Exercise equipment you stopped using in February
- Holiday decorations that are broken or you no longer put up
- Random lumber, scrap metal, and “might need it someday” piles
📦 Basement & Attic
- Water-damaged boxes and their contents
- Old furniture stored “just in case”
- Kids’ toys and baby gear they outgrew years ago
- Old tax records (IRS says keep 7 years; shred the rest)
- Luggage sets with broken wheels or zippers
🌳 Yard
- Dead branches and storm debris from winter
- Broken patio furniture, grills, and planters
- Old fencing, lattice, and landscape timbers
- Kids’ play equipment they’ve outgrown (swing sets, playhouses)
💰 Money-Saving Tips
- Sort before you call. Separating donations from junk reduces your haul-away cost because we charge by volume.
- Combine with neighbors. If your neighbor also has a pile, a shared truck load saves both of you money.
- Stage everything in one spot. The faster we can load, the less it costs. Pile it near the truck access point.
- Schedule mid-week. Our busiest days are Saturday and Monday. Tuesday through Thursday pickups are easier to fit in.
